EDCM has today (Monday 24th October) launched 'Disabled Children and Health Reform' - a campaign report calling on the Government to provide a clear focus on child health in the reform process and to ensure that the new health system addresses long-standing problems experienced by disabled children in accessing health services.

Take action on health reform

Failures in the health system can stop disabled children getting vital health support. These include:

- Delays to getting equipment - e.g. wheelchairs
- Restrictions on vital support - e.g. nappies for children with continence issues
- Disputes over who funds the service
- Poorly coordinated appointments
- Poor communication across the system
- A confusing transition to adult services

The Health and Social Care Bill, which enters Lords Committee on 25th October, is an opportunity to address these failures. However, there is currently no mention of disabled children or even the child health system in the Bill. Consequently, there is a significant risk that Government will repeat the mistakes of the past.

EDCM believes that there is a clear choice for Government; act now and use the opportunity of reform to create a system that works for disabled children, or proceed with reform concentrating on adults and leave families with disabled children struggling to fill the gaps.
